Introducing the Aarey Green Film Fest : The start of an annual ritual:

The group is excited to announce the First Green Films festival 2015, to be screened at the Newzealand Hostel hall in Aarey colony. The film festival is anticipated to be an annual event, underscoring the importance of Aarey with multiple linkages to our ecosystem. It seeks to inspire young and old Mumbaikars alike to appreciate the natural wealth around us and to create concern for Aarey’s precarious position.

A day long edutainment programme, the event will be co-organised by Paryavaran Dakshada Manch, a leading NGO that has been organising such programmes in Mumbai for several years.

Over 20 films made by professionals, nature enthusiasts, wildlife photographers, conservationists, travellers etc. will be screened with time ranging from 30 seconds to 45 minutes. There is something for all age groups with movies selected for school children, college students, and adults as well as retired persons.

It would a unique opportunity for people to get a chance to interact with leading environment workers and conservationists on a one-to-one basis. Something that watching Animal Planets and Discovery doesn’t provide.

More importantly, before & after each screening, Naturalists on the panels will conduct small FAQ sessions to make sure that the import of the film is carried beyond the convention halls into the hearts and minds of attending public.

There would be a small exhibit centre, display area for the Leopard photography contest, as well as food stalls. Various projects of the groups will also be exhibited and interested persons could choose a cause close to their heart, thus doing something more meaningful than just discussing the problems in the city. For the young minds, it a brilliant chance to experience a forest close home and experience a timeless bond with nature.

 Why it’s for everyone:

  • Films are carefully selected for its visual & Education + Fun appeal. Edutainment is the mantra.
  • Most of Films would be originals (Not screened on National Geographic etc. They are Unique & relevant to City or Aarey’s Issue)
  • The films cut across age barriers. There are various topics selected to make Green Films entertaining in its own way.
  • Move out of your Couch. Come & enjoy the best part of Mumbai Rains – Aarey.
  • We are doing the festival in association with “Paryavaran Dakshada Manch” who has more than 10 years experience of this festival

We want to see filmmakers, environmental experts, campaigners and local residents come together to watch, discuss Aarey’s issues. We want to drive the message to government on why a green oasis like Aarey should be preserved along with communicating all citizens / kids

We are now also using the power of film to spark environmental and social change.

The importance of Aarey – Biodiversity

Aarey Milk Colony or Aarey, as it is lovingly called by millions of Mumbaikars is situated in Goregaon East, a western suburb of Mumbai, off the Western Express Highway. It covers a total area of 3160 acres of land which comprises of gardens, a nursery, lakes, an observation pavilion, picnic facilities, and milk plants. 16,000 cattle are reared on 1,287 hectares of land, and 32 cattle farms. It is one of the last remaining green patches of the city.

Aarey is famous among nature enthusiasts for being the green lungs of the city – A total of 77 species of birds, 34 species of wildflowers, 86 species of butterflies, 13 species of amphibians, 46 species of reptiles, several of these being listed under Schedule II of the Wildlife Protection Act are found here. What’s more, 16 species of mammals, including the elusive but magnificent leopard, have been documented in Aarey.

The importance of Aarey – as an open space for Mumbai and the best place during rains

Aarey with its rich ecosystems of grasslands, scrubs, marshes and water bodies is the last refuge for the citizens of this city wanting a breath of fresh air and a respite from unending concrete jungles of the city.

Come Rains, and Aarey blossoms with the heavy sweet scent of wildflowers and the ground is flush with leaves of copperpod and rainforest trees. Butterflies are giddy collecting nectar as the frogs croak in unison from green canopies beyond lush grasslands, inviting all to be a part of this celebration of life, as it was meant to be.

All this, while being a stone’s throw away from the city. Unfortunately, a lot of people in Mumbai are unaware of this rich ecological heritage and think of only malls and couches during rains.
